Rowland tried a job for one day at a factory, then a week washing dishes, but after getting mugged and robbed from his earnings decided having a job was not his thing. Note 1: Rowland: "We were doing 'Prayers On Fire' [album], and were asked to play a benefit for [concert promoter] Laurie Richards because the Crystal Ballroom was going broke. Although Laurie had given us lots of gigs, he had also, we felt, treated us like shit. Considering that we guaranteed him an audience and played there every week for a year and made him a lot of money, he used to pay us really badly, and his attitude was, 'I've given you your big break, I made you'.
So our immediate reaction was, Tres Cabaret - Various - Ashtray Heart (CD), 'Fuck you! So we said, 'Fine, we'll play without you' [with Mick Harvey moving to drums]. It was a great set. Rowland S. Note 2: "Staying in the black remained a challenge for [Laurie] Richards; and for every 10 musos who'll swear they're in his debt for the early gigs he gave them, there might be one who reckons he still owes them 50 bucks.

Notes: "One of the best series of gigs were the three nights we did at the Tivoli Hotel in Adelaide in Januarywhen Hunters and Collectors were our road crew with the huge, dark-red Hieronymous Bosch 'Hell' reproduction hovering above the stage.
It was a really great show. We were sitting there all day thinking, 'It's going to be a disaster'; it had such a build-up beforehand that the third night was actually better again. Rowland [Howard]: "We were doing 'Loose' and Nick [Cave] called this guy [Michael] from the audience onto the stage and gave him the mike, and this guy sang 'Loose' very well, better than Nick was doing it. Tracy [Pew] hadn't seen any of this happen, and walked up behind the guy and pushed him as hard as he could with his boot in the small of the guy's back, so he went flying into the audience and landed on his head.
I hit the floor hard, and landed on my head. As a result, I spent the next half to three quarters of an hour in a daze, occasionally verging on semi-consciousness. Most of the time I was seeing double. There were moments when I couldn't see much at all If I had just invaded the stage and snatched the microphone off Nick, then I would've deserved to be kicked off. But the truth is that Nick invited me onto the stage, to sing Michael is right, it did reflect badly on the band.
It was really horrible and mortifying, because everyone had been tainted. It also points to the band's lack of clear communication. It's amazing that no-one was killed at their gigs. I've never experienced a similar hatred and intensity of anger directed towards any other band.
Photo: Screen capture from video. They all dressed up in costumes, we invited a lot of people from the Crystal Ballroom scene from the era, we also put the world out on RRR FM radio. We got an apprentice electrician to illegally tap into power.

I had managed to get cheap studio time in Studio Two, after midnight only, which suited them perfectly. They arrived with their gear at about eleven and I remember the receptionist calling me and saying 'I think your band has arrived - at least, they look like one of your bands. Can you get them out of reception? They are scaring the other clients'.
The single was released on Jan and the album on Feb]. They walked in looking like they hadn't slept in days, all smartly dressed in black like they had just come from church but maybe the church was a ruin with rats, and they hadn't washed in weeks. Being Australian they were actually very polite, but impatient to start - a trait that Cave has never lost. About halfway through I recognised the disappearing to the bathroom thing, but I'm glad to say it only added to the fuel and edginess of the night.

Setlist 2: Fever Bauhaus with Rowland S. Howard on guitar and Nick Cave doing most of the vocals. There's an English tradition that the main band cream pies the support band on the last gig.
A vaudevillian tradition? That didn't fit in with where we come from, although we'd got on well with Bauhaus. The other band, Vic Godard and The Subway Sect, weren't playing, so we went on to play in daylight, so it didn't feel right. It was an okay crowd, but the place had a noise meter, and with the light it all sort've dampened us. We came off spewing, spitting chips; 'Okay, how are we gonna get 'em back? We were saying, 'We'll get him, we'll pull his pants off on stage during their set'; but we decided that was a bit too heavy, but the roadie had split and warned them, so when Bauhaus were on, they thought we were going to pull Peter's pants down during their set.
Peter saw us from the stage trying to get on stage, and the roadies trying to hold us back, but we'd all been appointed to our places: arm, arm, leg, leg. Johnny Waller's a short stocky guy, and goes hurtling on stage in this major rugby tackle.
Peter Murphy hits the deck, we're all holding him down, Tracy runs in with a big black felt pen. Peter was fighting like hell; he was wearing these black leggings like tights and no top, and he thought his daks were coming off and he'd be left on stage starkers. Tracy drew this great big dick on his chest, and we all ran off. Peter stood up, looked down, and cracked up laughing. At the end, we all got up and did 'Fever', Nick and Pete swapping verses. Note: The Birthday Party do not play.
Neither do Joseph K, who don't turn up because of some sort of disagreement on the PA system. Note: "Welcome to The Birthday Party. Ad: Scan of ad taken from UK mag Aug Note: "A highpoint of the set was when one of the punters grabbed the mike and took over the vocals for the duration of a song" [as reviewed by Mike Nichols in Record Mirror Sep]. Note: Start of first date- tour of the USA. The concert starts around midnight at this upmarket rock disco. The audience consists out of the disco's clientele and only 8 fans, four from Chicago.
The trousers split during the first song. Tracy Pew sports a big black cowboy hat. Mick Harvey -who's screaming drunk- shouts insults at the audience, which does not want the band to be there.
During the 15 minute version of "King Ink" Nick walks into the audience, wraps the mic lead around the throat of a woman and screams ' Express yourself! The 10 remaining people start leaving. The concert is then stopped by the management of the club from Ian Johnston's biography "Bad Seed". Nick Cave had invited Iggy Pop to the gig, and he actually came.
Advertized as as The Birthday Boys because Ritz management didn't allow any shows prior the gig on Sep NME writer Barney Hoskins' article about the show, published on Oct, triggered the whole image of The Birthday Party as a wild and dangerous band for which violence at gigs was the standard.

Note 1: During "King Ink" Nick beat his head on the snare drum so hard it started bleeding upon which the club management decided to stop the concert, after only 35 minutes.
Note 2: Keith [Glass]: "Public Image [Ltd] had taunted the crowd some weeks earlier [May 15th, ] at the Ritz, so the Ritz were kinda nervous, partly because of the type of band The Birthday Party were, and partly because they'd heard the story from Union Square. They had about six security guys around the stage, and when the first microphone stand hit the ground they said, 'You've got 15 minutes to get out of here, and if you're not out by then you don't get paid.
The minimal audience really reacted to that. Nick reacted to the bouncers more than the audience, and after about four songs they pulled the plug. They paid us just to get out. Indisillusioned by a shallow and conservative fashion industry and encouraged by her boyfriend Bowie, who paid for singing and dancing lessons, Lear decided to launch a career in music. Bowie recommended a Hungarian voice coach Florence Wiese-Norberg, with whom he also worked, and the pair subsequently recorded a demo track called "Star", which remains unreleased to date. A French-language version of the track, " La Bagarre ", was released on Polydor in France and while equally unsuccessful there, it became a minor disco hit in West Germany in early The track caught the attention of the singer, composer and producer Anthony Monn and label Ariolawhich offered her a seven-year, six-album recording contract for a sum of money that Lear since has described as "astronomic".
The album included Lear's first European hit, " Blood and Honey ", as well as the follow-up Italian no. I Am a Photograph ' s mixture of lush disco, schlagerkitsch and camptopped with Lear's deep half-spoken, half-sung vocals and her characteristic Franglais accent was a successful combination.
The second edition of I Am a Photographwhich also contained German no. Lear allegedly had affairs with Keith Moon and Jimmy Page. InLear continued her line of disco hits with Sweet Revengean album that opens with a concept medley about a Faustian fairy tale of a girl who sells her soul to the devil for fame and fortune, and in her eventual revenge over the devil's offer finds true love.
The first single from Sweet Revenge" Follow Me ", powered by Lear's characteristic deep and recitative voice and the theme of the devil, was an instant smash hit. It reached the top 3 in the West German singles chart as well as top 10 in many European countries, and has been Lear's signature tune ever since. The Sweet Revenge album was certified gold in West Germany and France, and went on to sell in excess of four million copies, spawning further European hit singles " Gold " and " Enigma Give a Bit of Mmh to Me ".
The album featured a variety of genre exercises like the dance version of a war-time classic " Lili Marleen ", the interpersonal ballad " The Sphinx ", the cabaret-esque "Miroir", futuristic tracks "Black Holes" and "Intellectually", as well as the hit disco single " Fashion Pack Studio 54 ". She married him on 13 Marchwhile on a trip to the United States. This marriage is not official for the French state. As a consequence of this, and also the time taken up by Lear's successful career in music and television, she and her mentor began drifting apart.
They still sporadically kept in touch via letters and telephone through the early and mids, especially after Gala's death in Early 80s, she had her first art exhibition in Paris. In lateLear recorded Diamonds for Breakfastwhich was her commercial breakthrough on the Scandinavian market top 10 in both Sweden and Norway producing hits " Fabulous Lover, Love Me " and " Diamonds ", plus regional single releases "Japan", "When" and the autoerotic "Ho fatto l'amore con me".
The album abandoned the Munich disco sound with its lush strings and brass arrangements in favour of an electronic new wave rock style. Lear spent most of on European promotional tours for the album and its many accompanying single releases, from Greece to Finland. She also made her first visit to Japan, where both the single "Queen of Chinatown" and the Sweet Revenge album had charted.
At the artistic and commercial peak of her international career, but with the so-called " anti-disco backlash " beginning to take its toll, she had tentatively started recording tracks for a forthcoming album with producer Trevor Horn in London.
However, Ariola did not approve of the material and informed Lear that she was to return to Tres Cabaret - Various - Ashtray Heart (CD) and provide the company and the market with another Monn product. The result of these sessions was Incognitoonly partly co-written by Lear, with new wave material fueled with rock and electronic elements. Another non-album single followed in earlya synthpop take on the pop classic " Fever ". This would be Lear's final collaboration with producer Anthony Monn.
Shortly thereafter she took legal action against the Ariola label on the grounds of artistic differences to be released from her recording contract. The lawsuit was unsuccessful and she remained with Ariola until the end ofas stipulated in the original contract.
Inanother Italian language single, the ballad " Incredibilmente donna ", was released on the greatest hits compilation Ieri, oggi. These were Lear's final Munich recordings for Ariola and her final promotional appearance on West Germany's most important music TV show at the time, Musikladenin June Lear's international career momentum was slowing and effectively came to an end in December with her sixth and final Ariola album under contractual obligation. Tam-Tama collaboration with Italian composers and producers, was a modern and minimalist early s synthpop album with a soundscape dominated by Roland TR drum machines and sequencer-programmed synthesizers.
Lear again wrote all the English lyrics for the album. As a consequence, Tam-Tam passed by unnoticed by the international record-buying public.
Lear went on to launch a very successful and lucrative career as a TV presenter in Italy, thanks to the future prime minister Silvio Berlusconisoon becoming something of a household name in that country. She hosted many successful TV shows there, including Premiatissima and W le donne the latter adapted in France as Cherchez la femmein which she frequently promoted her music. The singer recorded a string of dance singles for various European labels: " Assassino " and " Ritmo Salsa " infollowed by " No Credit Card " and " Women " in Her music career, however, had waned by that point and she failed to find chart success with her recordings at that time.
Originally published in French, the book was translated into other languages in the second half of the 80s. These were the only major markets that Lear had not conquered during the Ariola years.
The launch was planned for Januaryhowever, just before promotion began, Lear was seriously injured in a near-fatal car accident and took months to recover, unable to promote the record properly. While in hospital, Lear began writing a novel, L'Immortellea surrealistic tale of the torments of a woman doomed to eternal youth and beauty.
A series of re-recordings of her old hits appeared on the market in the late s, starting with a synthpop take of the biggest hit, "Follow Me", in The following year, Italian band CCCP Fedeli alla linea recorded a cover of her song "Tomorrow", newly called "Tomorrow Voulez-vous un rendez-vous ", for which Lear contributed guest vocals.
The single was a minor hit in Italy and Amanda's first chart success in that country in six years. Inshe released a new up-tempo promotional-only single, "Do You Remember Me?
Lear continued to record more dancefloor-friendly repertoire in the s, starting with the song "Fantasy", which became a hit in clubs around Europe, especially gay. Cadavrexquisher next album, was released in and featured heavily club-oriented material, including "Fantasy" and re-recordings of three songs from the disco era. Both the single and the album failed to enter any mainstream charts. The show, which used her new song "Peep! In autumn, the singer released Alter Egoan upbeat eurodance offering.
The album again was not successful and did not produce any elusive international comeback hit, with singles "Everytime You Touch Me", "Peep! Lear released Back in Your Arms in springan album consisting of re-recordings of her own s disco hits and remixed versions of tracks from the album Alter Ego.
The album failed to make much impact on the market, but the re-recordings have since been featured on many mid-price compilations in Europe. Back in Your Arms was soon re-released with Tres Cabaret - Various - Ashtray Heart (CD) slightly different track list and title, and a new remix of "Blood and Honey" was released as the single.
The theme tune to the latter was "Nuda", a cover version of Melina Mercouri 's recording " Never on Sunday ", which Lear recorded but never released commercially. On the set of Il brutto anatroccolo Lear met male model and actor Manuel Casellasome thirty years her junior. Lear and Casella began a long-term relationship and were featured prominently in the tabloid press in both France and Italy, before splitting in The album offered a cover of " Love Boat ", the title song from the s TV series of the same nameand the club-friendly track "I Just Wanna Dance Again", both issued as singles featuring remixes by some prominent names in the world of French dance music, such as Laurent Wolf and Junior Vasquez.
Containing new dance-oriented tracks as well as ballads and a number of cover versions, Heart was greeted as a long overdue return to form. Lear played the mother's understanding and encouraging best friend and a fashion victimwhich gave her an opportunity to demonstrate her comedic talent. She also cut the title song for her new Italian TV show Cocktail d'amore in which she interviewed some of Italy's most famous s music stars, and released the single " Beats of Love " with the Belgian boy band Get Ready!
Both tracks were included in the re-release of Heartnewly titled Tendance. Inthe singer became a judge on Ballando con le stellethe Italian version of Dancing with the Starsand released two new dance singles, " Paris by Night " and the remake of Barry Manilow 's " Copacabana ", as well as two compilations, Forever Glam!
It won critical acclaim in France and was released in the rest of Europe in early Lear made several appearances in movies, including acting in Oliviero Rising and dubbing for the French version of Dragon Hunters. Inshe hosted several TV shows in Italy and France. The show turned out a huge success and was taken on tour.
The album consisted of two discs, with down-tempo songs and ballads on the first one, and a set of dance tracks and remixes on the other. The following month, Lear released autobiography Je ne suis pas celle que vous croyez The title song was released as the lead single, accompanied with an animated music video.
The Brief Encounters album was partly re-recorded and remixed, and subsequently released in Acoustique and Reloaded versions. Boy George remixed "Someone Else's Eyes" in She dubbed the voice of Janet the Lioness in the French version of Zookeeper. The play was another success and was taken on tour.
In springshe released My Happinessa tribute album with covers of Elvis Presley 's songs, promoted by the single and video " Suspicious Minds ". A combination of dance tracks and ballads, the album was a minor chart hit in Italy and spawned two dance singles "The Best Is Yet to Come" and "Catwalk".
On 16 Octoberinterviewed in the Italian program Domenica inAmanda Lear announced her retirement immediately after completing the La Candidate tour in spring however, she had to cancel a number of final dates due to health issues.
