Dec 30, · referencing Static Thoughts, LP, Album, ZZZ Real great Portland post-punk from just shy of a decade ago. Cover is pretty cool in a minimal / The MOB sort of way/5(45). The Estranged: Static Thoughts LP Record/Vinyl + Digital Album PDX 3 piece with a heavy background in the local HC/Crust scenes (members have been/are in bands like Remains Of The Day, Hellshock, Warcry, From Ashes Rise, Coldbringer, and lots more) Icy, ominous post punk ala Wipers, Mission Of Burma, Warsaw-era Joy Division, etc. LPs come with. Members come from the HC/Crust scene where they have a long history of playing in some of the genre's most influential bands. Kinda surprising then that on Static Thoughts the Estranged throw US a curve ball & wind up going off in an entirely new direction exploring ominous dark (musically & lyrically) post-punk a la Wipers meets M/5(2).
Interesting stuff. I think, in many ways, this will make a bigger difference to audio quality than any preference for one format over another. Out of interesting, which current playback systems would you say achieve the current digital standards? Totally on board with consumers voting with their feet.
Some might argue it already has. Agree Marc. It feels odd to complete a mix that sits 16 dB below what might be considered full scale. But if I submit a clean dB mix, Spotify will simply increase loudness by a few dB to match.
With these new standards in place, the loudness wars are effectively over. However, I can mention a few names on the production side. DMG EQuilibrium, for example, implements filters that were impossible to achieve as products a few years ago due to computer limitations. Artists are recording at deeper bit depths and faster sampling rates, which enables digital processing with very low artifacts.
All good. I think a big challenge moving forward is the room itself, whether the living room for playback or the studio for recording. While this sounds like a digression from your topic, it all adds up, on the way from the musical performance to the final product.
Great player, great room, great mics, great engineers, great mix and master, great delivery method. If all these ducks are not in a row, then the potential advantages of digital over vinyl becomes much less apparent. This is a great summary. In terms of pure sound quality, digital beats vinyl by some margin for a fraction of the The Message - The Estranged - Static Thoughts (Vinyl. As someone who is too invested in the format to go back, I would try to dissuade anyone from pursuing vinyl, unless they have money to burn.
I would love to buy more. All of the vinyl I desperately want is generally affordable year old material, but the shipping costs from Europe are absolutely crippling. Plus — I will never stream. I love playing vinyl particularly if the music was recorded on an analog tape recorder, but I also love owning CDs so I can always have access to legit, lossless digital audio of stuff too. Either way, if your new record arrives warped, you should send it back. I see this problem far too often with new vinyl records.
These are little bubbles or dimples on the record surface LP are visible to the naked eye and usually result in a loud bassy thud as the stylus runs through them. Whatever the cause, you should seek a refund or replacement if you notice these on any new record purchases.
A record pressed off-center — meaning the spindle hole is not central to the grooves stamped on the vinyl — is perhaps the worst culprit of them all. This glaring pressing error will result in small speed discrepancies as the disc spin causing audible wow and flutter pitch drift. Sadly, if one record is off-center, the whole batch is normally off, meaning that any replacement record will almost certainly have the exact same problem. The only LP to fix the problem is to crudely widen the spindle hole with a knife, and then manually center the record each time you play it.
A record clamp will help you secure the disc in place. To say this is less than ideal would be an understatement. Surface noise on brand new wax is another common complaint. In many circumstances, you should be able to fix this one yourself by wet cleaning the vinyl, either by hand or using a record cleaning machine. In fact, as a matter of good practice, I wet clean all my new vinyl The Message - The Estranged - Static Thoughts (Vinyl the first play.
In many cases, new records come contaminated straight from the factory and usually benefit from a light clean. Arguably, you can put some surface noise down as just the nature of the beast, but heavy surface noise on a new record is clearly unacceptable. How much is too much? Well, that depends on who you ask.
Parallel to this issue, there is much debate about the color of vinyl records and how this affects the sound quality. In my humble opinion, there is little difference in quality between black, white, clear, red, or any other color of vinyl for that matter. And while the jury may still be out on that one, most seem to agree picture discs typically sound worse than standard black or colored vinyl.
Demand for new vinyl records outstripping supply is a common theme when the topic of quality control rears its ugly head. And while some pressing plants are clearly better than others, there is a general feeling that many well-meaning pressing plants are running flat-out to meet demand. New record plants have opened in recent years, but there is still a feeling among vinyl fans that quality control remains a big problem.
Until that happens, the best thing you can do as a vinyl consumer is vote with your feet. What happened there?! From my own experience there seems to be a high percentage of warped records from the ones I have bought from new. Only once was this bad enough to return although I never quite got around to it….
My real bugbears with buying new vinyl are, 1 — The spindle hole not being properly cut out. The record goes on to the deck ok but then you end up nearly pulling the record player apart to get it off.
Liberal use of a round file solves this. Rant over! Totally agree with you, Vince. I recently bought Sex Pistols: Never Mind the Bollocks on vinyl, and while playing it I tried to lift the stylus off the vinyl with the cueing arm but it was still playing! I thought my Denon turntable was faulty but soon realised the disc was warped like a dish and the tracks near the centre were higher than the outer tracks.
Brian Cox books to try and flatten it. Also, bought some Panmer anti-static inner sleeves which are great.

I was playing Ace Frehley's Greatest Hits live. It's a double LP picture disc album. Brand new, never played. The other brand new LP that I was playing was KISS MTV Unplugged on yellow vinyl, and it was skipping also. I bought them at the same time, so I doubt that this is just some coincidence.
Portland post-punk act the Estranged recalls the early '80s heyday of challenging, intelligent bands such as the Wipers, Wire, and Mission of Burma. Their album STATIC THOUGHTS thrives on the taut-muscled tension to be heard in Joy Division’s sinewy rhythms and squalls of guitar. The album was released on the heals of the Motorhead’s multi-year legal battle with their record company, but there are some who say that this was the band’s message to the censor-happy.
