These are three previously released short woo-woo stories, one fromone from and one from The last one is from 21 years ago and let's hope she never tries woo woo again. It's not her forte. Leave time-tripping historical romance to Susanna Kearsley, please, Ms Balogh. I downloaded this without thinking, as a reward to myself for having finished all my Hurricane Irma preparations early. Only thing left is to give myself some psychological pep talks and look for my Star Not for me.
Only thing left is to give myself some psychological pep talks and look for my Starck's Prayer Book last seen during some particularly evil tornados in s Indiana. But enough about me and Irma. Back to this anthology of old stories. The first is mostly a ghost story with the heroine in tune with some old starcrossed lovers' ghosts.
She can see the man and feel the melancholic presence of the woman. Somehow she manages by the end of the story to uncross those lovers' stars and find True Love for herself. Second story is a ghostly, time-trippy one. Heroine wakes up at night in a dream state and actually seems to then inhabit the body of a long-ago woman on her way to her newly-wed husband, who is hiding because of being falsely accused of a crime.
The heroine, as she inhabits the other woman's body, falls in love with the husband. Luckily enough when she is not dream-state inhabiting another body, she meets up with a contemporary hunky reverse doppelganger of the long-ago husband for some insta-True Love for herself.
Third story is also a time-slip one and is beyond tedious, unless you're interested in trying to figure out how the contemporary hero and the long-ago man somehow are one and the same kind of and manage to cure the tuberculosis of the old-timey guy with the immune system of the more contemporary one.
There's a romance for both, BTW, neither particularly interesting, except for the fact that at one point they seem to be sharing the same long-ago woman.
So no more Mary woo woo for me. She spent too much time on the paranormal to give us any really lovely romances of H and h. In addition, although the stories are short, two of them in particular have too many pages of sexual encounters. Sex in romances is fine and all that, but Balogh sex is often not very enjoyable to read. It's never titillating, it's often awkward, and it's sometimes cringeworthy.
She almost manages to turn me off sex sometimes. I've not read any Balogh with fantastical elements, so it was a surprise. But this story was cute and enjoyable. I don't particularly believe in ghosts, and I'm not hugely into ghostly fiction, but for a short story it's not too bad. The romance is instalovey, not surprising in short format, but fairly cute.
The prose is lively and engaging, making a 60ish pa "The Dark Rider" I'd wondered what the theme of this anthology was, and that swiftly becomes apparent in the first story: the supernatural. The prose is lively and engaging, making a 60ish page short story with no chapters pass swiftly and pleasantly. It starts out like "The Dark Rider" with a young woman approaching a haunted old house, excited to unlock its mysteries, only in this case she's the owner of the castle for three months.
If she wants the castle for a lifetime, she must marry the Earl of Everett in three months. Cute and potentially shippy premise. Then she encounters the ghosts. In her dreams, she IS one of the ghosts, and she has sex with her lover.
So Daphne is in love with her ghost lover who died hundreds of years ago. I just!!! It made me laugh so much. And, like, it's weird how much more sex there is than most Mary Balogh, because why make the exception for ghost banging??? I don't like ghost romance at all, and I think it's super silly as a concept. Then, in the end, view spoiler [ they both had ghost sex, and they're reincarnations of the ghosts? Or something???? This absolutely did not hang together for me plot-wise, but it was hilarious and entertainingly batshit, so yeah no idea what I'd rate that.
The story sets up this time travel romance thing and then abandons that to shove together two couples who don't seem to fit. It's weird, and kinda boring. Sep 11, AMP rated it really liked it. Different from her other writings but still well written and engaging stories.
Jan 19, SidneyKay rated it it was ok Shelves: romance-anthology. Sometimes goddesses have a snafu or three. As I have mentioned before, my goddess Mary Balogh is in the process of releasing some of her old novels and novellas.
I am over the moon about this, especially because this brings new readers into the fold. I was pleased with the first anthology group A Rogue's Downfallbut the next group, No Ordinary LoveI'm not so over the moon with. No Ordinary Love has all the earmarks of author experimentation.
Yes, it seemed Ms. Balogh once dipped her toes into Sometimes goddesses have a snafu or three. Balogh once dipped her toes into paranormal romance. If I may be so bold, I'm glad she decided to stick with what she does best - historical romance sans ghosts. I like paranormal romance stories, I've been a big fan of them for a long time. I'm just not as obsessed with them as I am with historical romance. As with historical romance, I have created many rules my authors must abide by.
Sure they don't know them, but it's my dime. Anyway, over the years I have adopted some rules paranormal romance books need to follow for me to enjoy them.
One of the biggies is they have to make sense. Yes, yes, I know we are dealing with a world where the boundaries are pretty shaky and beliefs are stretched quite far. At least for me they do. Let's start with The Dark Rider. This story has a bit of Gothic romance feel No Ordinary Love it. You know the theme - a sweet nosy heroine, Dinah Ridding, visits a dark foreboding castle which is inhabited by an enigmatic, brooding hero, his secretive mother and creepy servants.
Our hero, Edgar Neville, doesn't want the heroine at the castle because???? He tries to get rid of her by telling Dinah ghosts stories. He approached and paused right in front of me. Just like last night, only a few inches rested between us. But unlike last night, something charged from him to me. It pulsed and throbbed back and forth as he stared into my eyes. I edged back and did a half-bow. Get A Copy. Kindle Editionpages. More Details No Ordinary Love 1.

The story is decently written, however there are some editing hiccups that were small and not overly distracting.
Nyomi's and Kenji's characters were mostly fleshed out but there didn't seem to be enough story around them for me. Nyomi is young, she's only 21 years old, and at 16 wrote a best selling book that exposed her fathe This is going to be a somewhat difficult review for me. Nyomi is young, she's only 21 years old, and at 16 wrote a best selling book that exposed her father's dirty dealings and lack of integrity. Her father resents the book that she wrote and they have a very contentious and destructive relationship.
However, it's stated that the public and the press turned against her later on after having initially hailed her a successful and bright young author, but I never quite figured out why everything went south with her book. Nyomi's angst stems from her abandonment issues with her father and her stressful relationship with her mother.
She is on a mission to prove that her initial success was not a fluke and that she can produce another ground breaking book. Choosing to write a book on the Japanese sex industry takes her to Japan to stay with a friend and ex lover to research this very closed world. Kenji is a young Yakuza boss who has stepped into the role of leader after loosing half of his family to violence and his father's rapid decline in health. Kenji does have a conscious and as the second son he had a brief stint outside of the dark world built by his father.
Kenji finds himself at a crossroads and believes that Nyomi is the key to helping him find his way out of the worst that his world has to offer. Kenji has is own demons to face that stem from his own father and the horrors that he exposed Kenji to at a young age.
I want to have empathy for Nyomi's character because she definitely feels the abandonment by her father deeply and her mother seems to be a weak parent to say the least. She's struggling to find her own identity and become a strong and successful person in her own right. However, there's just something that isn't allowing me to anchor to her like I expected. The lure of the dangerous and unpredictable is what attracts her to Kenji and the story starts off strong, it just lost me along the way as the story went on.
There's quite a bit of inner dialogue throughout the story so maybe that was part of what kept me from enjoying the story as much as I would have liked. Things are resolved rather quickly between Nyomi and Kenji so there are no cliffhangers and you do get a complete story.
It does need to be mentioned that there is a brief scene of breath play between Nyomi and Kenji as well as disturbing sex practices mentioned that Kenji and Nyomi do not participate in themselves. View all 3 comments. Kenya's mind is so fucking twisted and dark. You won't be disappointed!!

She and her male bff, "Zo without the e" have a way into the infamous business but not when the owner, Kenji Sato aka The Dragon sees the writer, Nyomi and says she's too beautiful and that it would caused major problems with No Ordinary Love rich clientele in his establishment, No Ordinary Love.
Honestly Kenji expected the writer, Nyomi to be an average looking woman so he had no problem with her being given a tour but when he sees her he turns her away After all a tiger is just a kitty right NOT when it comes to Nyomi! What started as a blatant "NO!! What I really enjoyed about this couple was that they learned that both their painful pasts connected them in more ways than one.
Nyomi was no doormat to Kenji or to any man for that matter but she learned to let go of her hatred of her father while The Dragon learned to listen to his heart about many issues that his cruel father continue to divide in No Ordinary Love Red District and that was not the legacy he needed to continue. Adrenaline rushed through my veins like I was about to start a high-impact race. God, what had he done to me? This was wrong and dark, yet here I stood, getting turned on even more.
He breathed me in and groaned. I need more. Just one reason I love them I am in Love with a Kenji Kenya is a visual writer and she did not disappoint in this book. He is a sexy complex Alpha and she is a hot complicated Vixen, both needing love and understanding. I love the voice of the characters Kenji, Ny and Zo without an E lol. He was a riot by the way. You will have to listen to what the character is really saying without the words. Kenji was a son trying to live to his mom expectations.
You would think it was the Dad he was trying to please but it was not. He wanted to honor her by honoring him the dad and his Tiger was helping him to see how or at least question why he was doing that. Yes his Dad left an impact on his world but what had to be done could have been done sooner, he just needed the right motivation.
She was reacting to the moms handling of all that he did. Her anger was merely redirected to him as she felt sorry for the mom and it was easier to hate him the parent who needed her less. That is what I took from the story anyway. She saw Kenji as powerful and so was her dad and he had wielded that great hurt on her mom so maybe she would suffer the same fate. There were all sorts of oddities in this book but they all worked. I loved the journey that each took to find their inner strength and the love that was so clearly there between them.
The hot Sex was a bonus… lmao … The Dragon can Choke me No Ordinary Love get my lacy any day… It is a fast pace book, moves from paragraph one so you will not be disappointed or bored… I absolutely loved it.
Another Great job KW Omg this book was hot throughout the whole story. This was a page turner till the end, if you haven't read it please do. View 1 comment. I can't sleep. The relationship between Kenji and Nyomi was all kinds of wrong but oh so right! This was my first book by this author, but it will not be my last. I've provided feedback in my status updates, but just to reiterate; Nyomi knew how bad Kenji AKA the Dragon was for her, but she just couldn't stay away.
And Kenji neede "You're a woman, one of the worst out there, because you're one that's hard to get out of my system. She made him Human!!! And together Well worth the purchase If you like a good plot, plus well developed characters, and hot steamy sex scenes between an Asian man and an African American woman then this book is for you.
I love reading Kenya Wright, her books always make me want another one.
