Octavia is decidedly portrayed as female from a Freudian perspective — concerning herself a lot with her appearance with obvious textual nods to what could be considered typical emotional idiosyncrasies of women, including bouts of intense emotional outbursts.

She also acts as a moral compass to the acclimated slaves. She has not yet become resigned to the lack of conscience displayed by the other slaves as they carry out the often bestially demeaning and cruel tasks for their demigod masters, who occasionally even hunt their slaves out of boredom for sport while in transit on their warship. She is drawn to Septimus as he is her only human guide into this new life she has been forced into, and though she resists the idea at first, eventually she seeks romantic satisfaction from their relationship.
