He rescues them and gains allies along the way, as others see Matilda and realize the story is true. Kyle, Michael and Caitlin flee and hide in the lighthouse. They are helped by several medical personnel, all of whom are killed by Matilda. During his final confrontation with Matilda, power is restored and the lighthouse beacon is activated.
The sudden exposure to light causes Matilda excruciating pain, and Kyle tears off her mask. Seeing her grotesque, disfigured face, he realizes she is now vulnerable. Enraged, she resumes her attack, during which Kyle's right sleeve catches fire and he strikes her face with it.
As her spirit is engulfed in flame, Matilda is destroyed and her curse is finally brought to an end. In a final scene, a young boy is being tucked into bed by his parents, having just lost his last baby tooth. As he sleeps, his mother replaces the tooth under his pillow with a gold coin, indicating that Matilda is gone and her curse is lifted.

It's a hard call to make. Would I want to live forever as a super-strength, part vampire, or take my chances as a weaker human? What is natural? What is right? I know that none of us hopefully! Jul 31, Sandy S rated it really liked it. Continuing immediately after Darkness Falls, Kayla continues to struggle with her new 'humanity'. Once a powerful Bellator, Kayla is barely able to hold her own against the zombie-like vampires roaming the ash-laden and fire-ravaged city.
Without the daily injections that make her stronger and faster, Kayla must consider whether to become a Day-Taker like Sylas or risk losing everyone she once loved to the mutant strain of vampire virus. As the ONE who will be humanity's savior, Kayla knows that there is only one option. And the once feared Highers will reveal themselves to be a bigger threat than anyone had thought possible.
Sylas and Kayla continue their nightly hunts, and only Kayla remains impervious to the vampire virus. But years of captivity and experiments have left Kayla without her memories and no one is willing to help her regain them back. Imprisoned against their will as children, Kayla, Sylas and his brother Aiden, as well as numerous other children, were subjected to daily injections and training in order to determine who was capable of saving the world.
Without their special abilities, the children were eventually eradicated and their whereabouts unknown. And to complicate matters, many do not know if their special abilities and affinities were manufactured by the doctors at the Colony, or part of their own DNA.
And once outside the Colony, the lies will continue to perpetuate the cycle of abuse. Outside of the Colony, Kayla must face those who were once her friends and are now considered the enemy, but many of these former captives, hold the secrets to Kayla's memories. Ryder holds the 'key' to Kayla's past, but Aiden holds the memories that the key will unlock: young Emmy can help bring forward the past, but Maci sees a future that continues to change.
Sylas has the ability to manipulate emotions, but in truth he says he can never lie. And where does that leave Kayla? These people must survive if Kayla is ever able to regain her past. The memories that come unbidden will show that there was something behind the Red Door and Cell 7 was the place where everything began.
But Sylas and Kayla will encounter a new-hybrid that will threaten their safety once again. Only this time, the experiment has gone totally wrong. And for Kayla to survive she must become the very thing she was programmed to destroy. There is a love triangle between Kayla, Sylas and Aiden, and Kayla's memories will slowly reveal that she was Darkness Falls (Joey Beltram Remix) - badboybill* - bangintheboxfive (CD) to both young men throughout most of her life and now Kayla's humanity remains in question when Sylas and Aiden are a different ends of the spectrum.
One wants her to remain human while the other demands she take the next step. Tristan returns but his intentions towards Kayla add to an otherwise tense situation and it is revealed, that Tristan is not the same boy that Kayla once loved at the Colony.
But where Kayla is concerned, nothing will ever be simple and in the end, there will be another form of hybrid, that is impervious to the vampire virus and is able to walk in the sun. And the virus? What will be revealed behind Cell7 and the Red Door is a struggle for perfection that went horribly wrong.
These are not your beautiful, sexy vampires, but are the rotting, life-destroying creatures of your worst nightmare. The small group of friends will lose a member while another's fate is unknown. Lies and betrayal will build walls that will be difficult to tear down but there is still the hope that one young girl will be the savior that either saves the world or tears it completely down.
Darkness Breaks is fast paced, well written and finishes with a cliff hanger, that like the characters will keep you wondering what was a lie and what was the truth. Copy supplied by author. Day Takers are vampires that can be out in the daytime, they just have to stay covered up. Kayla needs the help of Emmy a Day Taker to get her memories back. But Kayla finds out that she doesn't have all of her memories in her own head. Some of her memories are in Aiden's head. She will have to go see Aiden to get her memories back with Ryder's help this time. Kayla has to find the cure for the virus that turne Kayla leaves Aiden's little group to go stay with Sylas' and his group the Day Takers.
Kayla has to find the cure for the virus that turned everyone into vampires. When she gets some of her memories back she remembers about a place that is called Cell 7. She believes that Cell 7 has all the answers to finding the cure for the virus. But getting to Cell 7 will be a perilous journey thru a city filled with vampires.
Being human makes a trip thru the city harder for Kayla than if she was a Day Taker. Sylas and Kayla are growing closer together. Their feelings for each other are becoming stronger. Kayla still thinks about Aiden and cares about him a lot. Aiden only wants to take care of Kayla and make sure that she is safe.
Sylas is very straight up with Kayla he won't lie to her. Sylas wants Kayla to become a Day Taker but Aiden wants her to stay human. Sylas believes being a Day Taker is the only way to survive. Kayla is not sure that she wants to be a Day Taker, at least until she finds the cure. The vampires are very different from vampires in most other stories, Darkness Falls (Joey Beltram Remix) - badboybill* - bangintheboxfive (CD). Most of the other vampire books they are very hot and sexy but not these.
They are ugly and gross more like zombies in a post-apocalyptic world. Usually it is zombies in post-apocalyptic world and not vampires.
I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of Darkness Fades the 3rd book in the series. Hopefuly with Darkness Fades we will find out how the virus started and if they can cure it or at least prevent it from happening again.
Jun 13, Delphina rated it it was amazing Shelves: favorites. I am so loving this series. I was beyond happy when book two came out so close to the release of book one. Now if only book three could come out tomorrow. This YA series is sort of both paranormal and science fiction and it simply had me at the edge of my seat. I feel like I am discovering thi I am so loving this series. I feel like I am discovering things right along with her. As in her Fallen Star series, she explores the idea that some consider emotions as a detriment and how that impacts all involved.
There are so many ideas about this floating in my head. I love it when a novel can make me think about it even after I have already started another book. The author gives the reader credit for remembering the main ideas and I was able to jump right into the story. I tend to think I imagine it better than any producer. This series, however, I think would be amazing on the big screen. I think the feel of the world mixed with the action and the flashbacks could be magnificent on screen.
I was very sad when I got to the end of this book because when I went to see when the next one would be available, it said Fall and I do not want to wait that long. I would not recommend this book if you have not read Darkness Falls. While you could probably fill in the gaps and make it to the end of the book with some understanding, I think you would miss too much to really get the full enjoyment out of it.
Aug 17, Rachel rated it it was ok. Having got the first book very cheaply, I bought the second one because I was engrossed in the story and had to find out what happened. However, I'm only giving this book 2 stars because the way it is written is so annoying. Not only does the author use the irritating present tense style that I really hate but I appreciate that is specific to me, and that a lot of readers would not mindbut it also uses language in a really weird way.
For example, the sentence "Fear escalated the room" almost Having got the first book very cheaply, I bought the second one because I was engrossed in the story and had to find out what happened. For example, the sentence "Fear escalated the room" almost makes sense, but just sounds weird to me! And there are many more similar examples. I know authors don't always have to stick to strict grammar rules and can and should play with language in order to create certain effects, but this was certainly not achieved in this book.
Honestly, in some places it felt like the author had never actually read the book back to check how it sounded. Having said that, the plot is intricate and interesting. The process of gradually revealing memories throughout the book as with the first book is great for building tension and for allowing the reader to gradually build a picture. The only plot complaint that I have is that I still have no idea what's going on, and I keep losing track of what's happened in previous memories, owing to having left a gap between reading the first and second books.
What's more, I have to buy a third book before I can find out what's going on for sure. I really really hope there isn't a fourth one! I'm still debating whether or not I'm going to buy the third one, since I found the writing style in this one so infuriating. Darkness Breaks picks up just after Darkness Falls ends and is worth reading for Sylas alone. I adored him and am keeping my fingers crossed for his speedy return in book three Darkness Fades.
I found the juxtaposition of him and Aiden interesting. While one openly declares himself evil and the other tries ardently to do the right thing, you are still left wondering which on is really working for the forces of good in the world. It's all yet to be seen though. I think I had as many questions at the end of the book as I did at the beginning. I did start to think that maybe Kayla was a little too perfect.
I realise, of course, that she was designed to be that way, but surely she needs a weakness somewhere. Her perfection started to strain the confines of credibility a little. I also started to wonder about the rest of the world. Kayla is on about saving it, but there is no indication beyond assumption that the virus Darkness Falls (Joey Beltram Remix) - badboybill* - bangintheboxfive (CD) spread worldwide or that this is the last enclave of humanity.
It's just a niggle, but it is there in the back of my mind. I eagerly await the next book in the series. I enjoyed the characters and the hint of a romance that is so much more than a rushed lust-based affair. A worthy continuation of the series. Mar 17, Janysa rated it it was amazing. I actually liked Aiden in the first book, but this book he was just so annoying!
He was so overprotective, I know he loves her and everything but he needs to chill the flip out. Ryder is another one. God she is so jealous of Kayla. I mean face it Sylas and Aiden don't like you like they like Kayla. And I can totally tell why Oooo but Sylas was swoon worthy in this book.

Loved this one more than the first one. We get to see more of Sylas which is awesome, cause I liked Sylas since the first book and Aiden just rubbed me the wrong way, and in this book I get proven right!
I didn't really like Aiden in the first book but I was willing to over look it, but my god in this one I wanted to throttle him! Who does that!!! I don't care if he is so worried about her he can't let her g Loved this one more than the first one. I don't care if he is so worried about her he can't let her go, that is just wrong.
And it makes me wonder if what he feels is actually love or if Monarch somehow programmed him that, so that he would help her with her memories. But the most pressing question is! Aug 25, Lindsay rated it it was ok.
I have the eBook version. Darkness Breaks is the sequel to Darkness Falls. It is different from other vampire books because it is about a world populated with different breeds which makes a lot of sense and how some are more intelligent or less affected by weaknesses.
The Highers are top of the food chain in the world but fear being toppled by a cure. I like the characters, but it seems like nothing is really happening. This book and the first could really use some editing. More likely then no I have the eBook version. More likely then not, this series could have been a stand alone book, but someone didn't stand up and make cuts.
Also the eBook has so many typos, misspellings, and bad formatting that it is hard to stay in the story when there are such glaring mistakes. A quick, interesting read, but hard to overlook the problems.

Jun 05, Nicole rated it it was amazing. Aug 21, Gailda rated it really liked it. I also appreciate the fact that Kayla does not spend needless amounts of time talking about her physical appearance in front of a mirror Does anyone actually just stand in front of a mirror and think of all their facial features in various poetic ways?
As per always, I have difficulties articulating my thoughts on main characters in stories. On one hand, she is unnervingly perfect — has a few love interests, can kick ass, caring,is destined to be the heroine, courageous, presumably physically attractive etc etc.
She is also a compulsive liar, but unlike Aiden, her lies are usually to protect herself from others. She has a particular character and traits that belong to her, but she also has an element of unpredictability that makes her interesting.
Sylas Sylas Anders is the stereotypical bad boy with a soft gooey center. Aiden When I first started this series, I thought that Kayla and Aiden were going to be the end game.
That no matter how many potential love interests were thrown in, Aiden and Kayla would be together in the end. So it comes as a surprise to me when I realise that Aiden and Kayla are not definitely going to end up together, and furthermore, I find myself vehemently denying the future of their relationship.
In my first review, I made my distaste for Aiden clear. Hopefully, it answers all the questions I've been wondering and surprises me! Rating 3. Apr 17, Natasha rated it it was amazing Shelves: reviewed-written.
Darkness Breaks by Jessica Sorensen starts off just were we left Kayla at the end of book 1 Darkness Falls and it doesn't take long for author Jessica Sorensen get's readers blood pumping, heart racing and back into the action packed adventure that is Darkness Breaks.
I have to admit that Jessica Sorensen, is my favourite indie author, hell she's my favourite author of No one can pull me out of a reading slump like Jessica can. Her writing is detailed, suspenseful, addictive and you can see Darkness Breaks by Jessica Sorensen starts off just were we left Kayla at the end of book 1 Darkness Falls and it doesn't take long for author Jessica Sorensen get's readers blood pumping, heart racing and back into the action packed adventure that is Darkness Breaks.
Her writing is detailed, suspenseful, addictive and you can see in her books that she is a true story teller. As for Darkness Breaks, we continue the story of Kayla and her journey to save the world from what it has become. A world which is full of rotting vampire's hungry for blood and Higher's who control pretty much everyone and everything. As for Kayla, all she knows is that Monarch has a plan for her, a plan that will save the world and with no memory of the plan.
Kayla knows its now up to her to figure out what that plan is and first she needs her memory back. So Kayla leaves Aiden and the other humans at their hideaway and is now with Sylas and the other Day Takers, hiding away in the city, trying to put the pieces back together as her memories Darkness Falls (Joey Beltram Remix) - badboybill* - bangintheboxfive (CD) with the help from a day taker and a syringe full of liquid.
But nothing is ever that easy, as Kayla is about to learn. What I loved most about Darkness Breaks, was the characters. Jessica makes each character stand out with strong personality's that you love to love or you love to hate. Another thing I loved was the action, the never ending twists and turns the character's seems to go though during the book. As for the love triangle between Kayla and the 2 brothers Aiden and Sylas.
Which I am betting on Sylas winning Kayla's heart. Aiden, had me superstitious in book 1. In book 2, I now don't trust him as far as I can kick him which isn't far at all. Sylas on the other hand is the total opposite of Aiden and I believe Sylas every time when he tells Kayla 'I don't lie, that's what my brother does". The characters, are a joy to read, Jessica's writing will keep any reader on the edge of their seat from start to finish and leave you hanging with her signature cliff hanger ending.
Jul 18, Stephanie Moakes rated it it was amazing. I was immediately thrown back into the action and questions from the end of the first book were established again within the first few pages, so it was easy to get right back into the heart of the story.
Sorensen is an amazing storyteller and her ability to mix glimpses of the past with the fast moving action of the present if truly remarkable, she uses every word carefully, never wasting a moment and each chapter propels the story forward. The thing I loved the most about this book?

This review does not contain any spoilers. I thought this book was good, i enjoyed it as much as the first one and liked the fast pace and easy reading. It was a post apocalyptic, dystopian vampire novel about a teenage girl called Kayla Juniper. Her memories have been tampered with and most of the novel concerns her trying to work out who she really is, what to do to help and how she really feels about those around her.
Who can she really trust? She wont know until she can unlock the secrets of This review does not contain any spoilers. She wont know until she can unlock the secrets of her past! However there were too many mistakes, typos and turns of phrase that just didn't make any sense to me for me to give it higher than 2 stars.
In actual fact it was more like 2. I give it the extra. I'm not claiming to be perfect myself but i am not writing novels either. This book does fall into a few too many cliches, the love triangle, the feisty female lead with unknown quantities of abilities. I hate to shout Mary Sue because the reason we read these books about these people is because they're leading interesting lives were cool shit happens to them But this doesn't mean they have to be the center of the bloody universe and the key to mankind's salvation.
Why is it always teenagers and not mature people in their thirties this is left up to any way!!! There was also Aiden's bitch side kick Ryder who's one liners were really totally cringe, nobody talks like that however much they hate somebody. In my review of book one, I said the Highers were a form of Vampire. That was my assumption, yet it is still not for sure even after this second book so… im still gonna think it. Though in this book, there was a new cross breed introduced. A lot of her books have a ton of plot holes, and SO many unanswered questions, and unimportant details. But even with all this errors, the books are freakin awesome bec of the story telling. I WAS Kayla. I felt like her, I thought like her, I believed in her.
